Bio

Aikaterini Kontou (b. Thessaloniki, Greece) is a visual artist with a background in Architecture based in Frankfurt am Main, Germany. Working primarily in painting, she is best known for her large-scale portraits and figurative compositions that merge personal experience with broader reflections on identity and femininity.

Her paintings are rooted in autobiography and a psychological examination of the woman’s place in male-dominating societies. Using mixed media—often acrylics, ink, charcoal, and layered surfaces—she presents fragmented figures, masks, and veils to probe the complexities of female subjectivity, oppression, vulnerability, and resilience. Works such as Hidden Abuse (2021), Broken-, Fragmented (2024), and the “mask inspired” and “geishas inspired” mini-series reflect her characteristic interplay of abstraction and figuration, of inner wounds and outer forms.

Aikaterini Kontou first exhibited her work in a solo Exhibition in 2021 in Galerie Textor74. Ever since she participates in solo and group exhibitions in Frankfurt and beyond every year. She is also involved with the theater collective Acting-Up Collective, which informs her interdisciplinary understanding of presence and persona. In addition to her artistic practice, she is acting as curator for an upcoming group exhibition in Berlin in 2026. Although rather new in the art scene, her works are already held in private collections, and her participation in exhibitions and curatorial projects continues to expand her visibility in contemporary art circuits.
